GCSE ICT, IGCSE ICT & GCSE Business Communication Systems
Our first step is to confirm which examining board and specification your child is working with. (“Specification” is the name the examining boards now use for what many of us used to know as a syllabus). Once we know that, we can tailor the lessons to the precise requirements of that specification.
We can help pupils prepare for examinations with all of the common examining boards – AQA, OCR, Edexcel and CIE.
Although they differ in detail, all specifications assess candidates through some combination of examinations and controlled assessment. Examinations cover theoretical aspects of the subject. Controlled assessments look at practical coursework. The assessment is made by a child’s teacher, but in some cases it is possible to prepare for the activity by carrying out research outside school.
In the IGCSE ICT and in Business Communication Systems pupils also sit practical exams.
In our experience, there are three things which are key to achieving top marks in these exams – practical ability, theoretical knowledge, and a really good grasp of precisely what the examiners are looking for. Our tuition is therefore structured around these key issues :-
1. Through practical exercises, we help students acquire the general skills* they will need. Usually, this involves becoming familiar with various software packages. The precise details vary between specifications, but typically this includes word-processing, desktop publishing and graphics, presentation software, spreadsheets, databases and web-authoring. In common with the large majority of schools, Stepping Stones Tutors teaches these skills using Microsoft Office software.
2. We explain the theoretical material in detail to give pupils an understanding of the type and style of questions that they will encounter on written exam papers. We also look at exam technique, and how their answers should be structured.
3. We explain how controlled assessments are marked, thus enabling students to work in the way which is most likely to help them obtain high marks.
Throughout all of this work, both in practical exercises and in theory work, the emphasis is on working through past papers and making pupils familiar with how the papers are marked.
* We must emphasise that the examining boards do not permit us to provide advice on the specific content of controlled assessments – this would be regarded as cheating. However, in our experience, the more general topics we cover do make a huge difference to how well students fare in their exams.
Students will be offered a free assessment to determine a programme to suit their individual needs. Students will learn at their own pace with their progress regularly monitored. Click here to book a Free Assessment from our Contact page.
